Art statement
Through painting, I try to convey and translate a message about the search for identity. The culture of our country defines only a part of who we are. My research is based on cultural and identity métissage: Mexican culture, my homeland, and Québécois culture, my adopted country. Sharing is a key word in my work. I want to share my experiences. How does an individual, newly arrived in a country, build their sense of belonging to the host society? People adapt differently to their new culture: some remain fully attached to their values, others decide to let go of certain ones in order to adopt new ones, while others completely change their way of life. It is a constant search for belonging that can be unsettling. If we no longer belong to our homeland, and we can never fully belong to our host country, then we can create a new identity, one that results from this dual belonging.
Currently, I am working on a series of paintings called HOME. This project reflects a Mexican-style house in which I portray myself living both Mexican and Québécois cultures. This house will represent me and serves as an analogy for the process of identity métissage. The exterior of this house reflects the influence of this new culture, which gradually blends with the interior that illustrates the culture of origin.
Bio
Anahi is a Canadian-Mexican artist based in Montreal. Born in Torreón (Coahuila), she moved to Montreal at the age of twelve with her mother and sister. After several challenging years and the process of adapting to her new life, she eventually fell in love with the city. From a young age, she discovered a love and passion for the visual arts, and after moving to Montreal, she developed a strong cultural affiliation that was intensified by distance. This is why she chose to use art as a way of illustrating her experiences and feelings tied to living between two cultures.
